Volunteering time can always take a lot away from your personal life, but this week's Hometown Hero has been donating his time for more than 17 years and said he has enjoyed ever minute of it.

"I just get up and go," said Larry Bragg, this week's Hometown Hero.

Bragg is the volunteer fire chief at the Austin Tracey Fire Department.

"He goes over and above his responsibility," Chairman of the Board, Bobby Morrison said.

Bragg said in all the years he has been volunteering, he has never not gone out to help when he has been called.

"I've even got cattle out of a big sink hole. I do things that don't really involve the fire department. They call me because I guess over the years, [they] know that I would try and help people," Bragg said.

Riley Mesker said he looks up to Bragg because he does all his work out of the goodness of his heart.

"It's not like he [is] there for the money - he's just there to help people in his community," Mesker said.

Bragg said he doesn't think doing what you love deserves recognition.

"I'm not a hero, I just do what I enjoy and I enjoy helping people," Bragg said.

Morrison said Bragg has always been there to help him out when he needs it - day or night.

"You don't appreciate something like that until it happens at home," Morrison said.

Mesker said he has a very fond memory of Bragg he will never forget even as he gets older.

"He helped my dad and he's just an all around nice person and helps this community," Mesker explained.

Bragg said he will one day resign as being the chief, but he will not quit being a firefighter all together. He said he could not imagine his life where he wasn't in a position of helping those in need.
