A Columbia, Ky., man is in a Lexington hospital on June 4, 2007, after an altercation with a state trooper at the Adair County Jail.
According to Kentucky State Police in Columbia, 53-year-old Billy Phillips was arrested on June 1, for driving under the influence.
Once inside the jail, police said Phillips “lunged” at Trooper B.J. Burton several times. During the last altercation, state police say Trooper Burton hit Phillips who then fell into the wall and onto the floor.
According to police, Phillips either hit his head against the wall or the concrete floor when he fell. Phillips was taken to the Westlake Regional Hospital and then flown to the U.K. Medical Center.
Police said Phillips was “handcuffed in the front” at the time of the altercation.
An investigation into the incident is being conducted.
