Stephen Foster is known for writing the state song "My Old Kentucky Home," but the name Stephen Foster has a new meaning in Kentucky.

Stephen Foster is the founder of The Bowling Green Brewing Company. The brewery has been in business for about two months now and is the first micro-brewery in South Central Kentucky.

"Drinking like a fish," Foster explained, is the logo for Stephen Foster Beer.

Foster created the label and the idea for the Bowling Green Brewing Company.

"Once I went to Europe I discovered the interest in beer - the miracle of beer," Foster said.

So Foster went to school to get a brewing education.

"I have brewed professionally in South Africa, England and Germany," Foster explained.

"It's been one of his hobbies for a long time," said Robert Evans, part owner of The Bowling Green Brewing Company and general manager of Chuck's Liquors.

"Just a hop head I guess," Foster described himself as.

Foster said one thing led to another and he ended up back in Bowling Green where he originally went to college.

"Stephen Foster approached our family with the idea of opening a micro-brewery in Bowling Green in South Central Kentucky and we liked the idea," Evans explained. "It's unique, something different we can bring to the community here."

Evans, along with the other owner's of Chuck's Liquors are also shareholders of the brewing company.

"He loves the Bavarian style heavy vi sen wheats," Evans explained. "It's a different style of beer and right now the popularity of heavy vi sen is growing in the United States."

"It keeps them coming back for that style of beer," Foster said.

He also said they brew about every two to three days.

"Over a period of two-and-a-half days it will change that wart into beer," Foster explained. "It takes two-and-a-half to three days for fermentation."

Then, it's bottled and shipped.

Foster said the beer is still catching on in Kentucky, but the goal is to follow their label and have fun.

Stephen Foster Wheat Beer has been added to the list of Kentucky Proud Foods.

Foster said it's made with ingredients imported from Germany to stay as true to the style as possible.

Some of the places the beer can be found in Bowling Green are restaurants like Smokey Bones, Montana Grill, Rafferty's, Mariah's, The Cellar and Froggy's. It can also be bought at Chuck's Liquors and Red Barn Liquors.

Stephen Foster Beer is also sold at liquor stores in Louisville, Lexington, Paducah and Elizabethtown.
