A Hopkins County man is behind bars after police allege he beat up his girlfriend.

On Tuesday morning Troopers from Kentucky State Police Post Two responded to a residence in Madisonville.

There, a woman claimed her boyfriend assaulted her after an argument and held her against her will in the home for another nine hours before leaving.

She was then able to call police from a neighbor's house before going to a hospital for her injuries.

Later Tuesday, Troopers arrested 46-year-old Barry Swanagan of Madisonville charging him with assault and unlawful imprisonment.

Swanagan was lodged in the Hopkins County Detention center on a $10,000 bond.
