OWENSBORO, Ky. (AP) -- The state has denied a permit for an eastern Kentucky coal company to continue operating a coal ash disposal site in Daviess County.

The site run by Appalachian Fuels stores coal ash, also known as fly ash, which is a byproduct of coal combustion. The Messenger-Inquirer in Owensboro reports the permit for the 79-acre site was issued in 1992.

Ron Gruzesky, manager of the state Division of Waste Management, says the site has been used minimally since the permit was first issued.

Appalachian Fuels is in Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Gruzesky says the renewal was denied because the company did not detail what it would cost to eventually close the landfill. Greuzesky says the company has not responded to letters requesting the documents.
