When Louisville's smoking ban takes effect in July, Churchill Downs won't have to comply.
The iconic racetrack is exempt from the ordinance , and that's become a point of contention among members of Louisville's Metro Council, which is considering whether to require Churchill Downs to conform with other businesses.
Councilman Hal Heiner has introduced a measure that will be taken up next week by a committee to bar smoking from the track's Champion's Lounge, which serves food and alcohol.
Under the ordinance, smoking is prohibited in every building in Jefferson County except for the racetrack's lounge, homes and a tobacco manufacturing plant.
