The city of Charleston, S.C. is mourning the death of nine firefighters. They were killed in an overnight fire at a furniture warehouse.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation, but Charleston’s mayor said arson is not suspected. He said the fire apparently started in a storage area. It’s unknown if there were sprinklers in the building.
Witnesses say the collapse of the roof threw debris over about 24 rescue workers. Two employees in the building were rescued.
The fire department in Charleston has 237 firefighters in 19 companies located throughout the city.
