Governor Fletcher said in a written statement that casino gambling will not happen on his watch in Kentucky.
The governor, an ordained Baptist minister, has long held that he is personally opposed to casino gambling, but would leave the issue up to the voters, if a gambling referendum made it on the ballot.
Fletcher’s challenger in the fall general election, Democrat Steve Beshear supports efforts to legalize casino gambling in Kentucky.
Fletcher’s campaign said the fall election should be a referendum on the matter.
