Holiday Driving Statistics

Despite high gasoline prices at the pump, Kentucky State Police expect heavy traffic throughout this Fourth of July holiday driving period.

With the fourth falling on a Wednesday, many travelers will extend their vacation plans to include the weekend before or after the holiday.

State police plan increased patrols during that time frame and motorists are urged to use extreme caution while traveling.

State Police Commissioner Jack Adams said the Independence Day holiday driving period has become one of the most dangerous times for highway travel.

He said last year there were 11,060 crashes on Kentucky roads during the four-day driving period. The collisions resulted in 16 fatalities and 494 injuries.

Adams said many of the deaths and injuries could have been prevented if motorists practiced basic defensive driving skills and used seat belts.
