Louisville Highway Shutdown

Louisville-area commuters and visitors are searching for alternate routes to their destinations as the month-long shutdown of a long stretch of Interstate 64 approaches.

The expressway is one of Louisville’s major arteries, but a state highway spokeswoman said it hasn’t had major repairs since it opened 40 years ago.

Chunks of concrete have been falling off the underside of the highway which carries nearly 100,000 vehicles a day.

The interstate from 3rd Street, downtown to 22nd Street, one and a half miles to the west is closing early on July 5, 2007, and is to be shut down until August 6.

The highway was already closed for three weekends in June to start the repair work.

Many businesses are urging employees to take public transportation and some are providing off-site parking and shuttles.
