The Jefferson County School District creates a new student-assignment policy to comply with a recent Supreme Court ruling .
The 14-page proposal for the 2009-2010 school year was approved on July 23, 2007. It's an early step by the district to comply with a court ruling that says race can't be a deciding factor in individual student assignments.
Superintendent Sheldon Berman said the district will immediately begin to follow the timeline established in the plan.
The plan includes working with desegregation experts, researching the effect of different assignment models and examining plans in several U.S. cities.
The plan has been submitted to U.S. District Judge John Heyburn for guidance and approval.
