Bowling Green Ophthalmologist Rand Paul has been trekking the state for the past few months and he says the work seems to be paying off.
Lieutenant Governor Daniel Mongiardo has also been spending most of his time trying to get new constituents for his run on the democratic side.
Now a new poll seems to be saying it all... meaning both men could be destined for November's election.
Rand Paul says he's known he's been beating Secretary Of State Trey Grayson for a while now.
"We've sensed it because the other side attacks us all the time now. So we figure if they're attacking us, we must be ahead," quips Paul.
Now a poll proves it.
According to the latest WHAS-11/ Courier-Journal Bluegrass Poll, Rand Paul has a 15 point lead over Grayson with 42% of the vote.
Also with a leg up on his competition on the Democratic side is Lieutenant Governor Daniel Mongiardo, who's leading Attorney General Jack Conway by 18 points.
"I think its actually the fact that I have been doing the job and I believe the job of being in politics is not behind a desk, but its meeting people and being around the state," says Mongiardo.
As May looms, there has been some contentious war of words between Paul and Grayson.
Paul says he doesn't plan on running a negative ads about Grayson but won't back down if he continues to come after him.
"I think really that we've defined ourselves ad the conservative in the race. As the one who will reign in Federal spending, who will balance the budget and so if he just goes out there and tries to criticize me, I think it'll be a tough time for him because he hasn't really defined himself yet," notes Paul.
While both men are focusing on winning their primaries, they are beginning to battle with each other now... in case they face off on November ballot.
The two had their first unplanned face-off last week after Mongiardo was interrupted while speaking at a rally in opposition of current Senator Jim Bunning.
"We actually turned out more people. It was funny that as he was speaking, our people were all chanting "Pay.Go" "Pay.Go", which means pay as you go," recalls Paul.
"They were pretty uncivil, yelling and screaming and we can't have a civil conversation when we're so polarized like that," responds Mongiardo.
Paul also says it is exciting to know that his message is resonating so well with many Kentuckians.
This is Paul's first lead in the "Bluegrass Poll" while, Mongiardo's seen his lead grow since the first poll last year.
