LAGRANGE, Ky. (AP) -- A judge has entered a not guilty plea for a Corbin woman charged after her newborn was found dead in the trash at a state prison.
The Courier-Journal reports that 20-year-old Ashley Nicole Cox gently shook her head and clinched her eyes shut Wednesday as Oldham District Judge Diane Wheeler read the charges in a Lagrange courtroom.
Cox is charged with murder and concealing the birth of an infant. The newspaper reported that she was appointed a public defender and a preliminary hearing was set for March 17.
Police say preliminary autopsy results show the baby was alive and healthy when she was born in a visitor's bathroom at the Roederer Correctional Complex on Sunday. A cause of death has not been determined.
