Two former Ohio County High School girls' basketball coaches now face multiple charges for allegedly having sex with minors nearly 10 years ago.

Terry Nofsinger faces 29 counts of "sodomy, sexual abuse, and unlawful interaction with a minor".

His former assistant coach, Nathan Phelps is a facing charges of "unlawful transaction with a minor" for allegedly sleeping with 15 and 16 year old girls.

According to the charges, between 1999 and 2004 both Nofsinger and Phelps engaged in sexual activity with underage females.

Kentucky State Police Post 16 Trooper Corey King says the sexual acts likely took place on school property and possibly during girls' basketball trips.

Its a unexpected development in a small community that isn't used to this type of attention, and says it never saw this coming.

"Its shocking and it really concerns me," states Ohio County resident, Tabitha Maden.

"I thought it was horrible. Very horrible," says fellow resident Janet Stewart.

Word that two former basketball coaches are now accused of sleeping with minors has sent chills through the usually quiet Ohio County community.

"I just think its horrible that they're not safe. That they can't be trusting of teachers and the elders that should be caring for them and leading them in the right direction," adds Stewart.

Nofsinger is facing multiple charges of "sexual abuse, unlawful transaction with a minor, and sodomy", which the indictment report says was forced.

King says as of right now there is indication that Nofsinger had a sexual relationship with two 16-year-old girls between 2000 and 2004.

Phelps is accused of sleeping with a 15-year-old during the 1999-2000 school year.

An investigation began last September when one of Nofsinger's victims finally reported him to the police.

Stewart says this incident makes her question the safety of young women within the school system.

"If I had a teenager today, especially a girl, I'd want her to be with someone at all times. Never be alone with an adult because this isn't the first time this has happened."

While Maden says although she is truly concerned, she isn't as quick to believe these charges are true.

"I don't believe it because most of the time when things go on right here, its such a small community, it wouldn't go on for 3 years."

Nofsinger is currently a history teacher and boys basketball coach at Todd Central High School.

Todd County superintendent Mike Kenner says Nofsinger has been suspended without pay pending "final action for termination".

Phelps, now a teacher at Ohio County Middle School has also been suspended while the school board conducts its own investigation.

Both men are free on bond.
