WKU Storm Damage

Chainsaws were roaring around the campus at Western Kentucky University in the aftermath of the storms.

"Some of the biggest trees on campus blowed over on some of the vehicles and on top of fences and all kinds of stuff," says Jeff McAdoo. McAdoo is the senior groundskeeper at WKU.

Grounds crews say the cleanup of damage from last week's storms was nearly complete, when the storms left messes like this behind.

An SUV parked near the alumni center was parked in the tree's path and sustained some damage when part of the tree landed on it.

At the Garrett Conference Center a tree fell onto a WKU Dining Services van, caving in the roof.

At Nick Denes Field the Hilltoppers outfield wall was damaged. Three spots of the wall were blown away and need repair.

Storms also ripped through sorority houses near campus.

Tamara Evans is an AOPi sorority member. She says, "We all got back last night and the power was oput and there was a really bad storm so we all decided to go to bed. But around 5:30 this morning we heard a big boom. And when we got out here we foudn our cars underneath the big tree in the front yard."

Evan's car will need a new paint job for the dents and scratches and she says now the driver's side door won't open. Repair work could cost between $2000 and $3000.

Evans says, "There are two other cars that were hurt. Mine and two others. One of them is actually underneath the trees right now. The other one had a couple of dents on it."

Cleanup crews at WKU say it may take some time to get the campus back in shape.

McAdoo says, "It'll take at least a couple of weks. Everybody working as hard as they can, using saws and trucks hauling, stuff like that."
