Many students are returning to class this week and getting ready to go back to school. The Barren River Health Department says lately they've been very busy with students get last minute shots required by state law. According to the latest figures, Warren County is above the national average with 87 percent of toddlers being up to date on their shots. Health officials estimate that by age two most children have had at least twenty vaccines.

If your child needs a shot and they're under 19 the Health Department charges five dollars for the office visit, two dollars for the first shot, and one dollar for each additional shot.

Immunizations

  • All states now require proof of immunization before they will allow children to attend school.

  • State laws vary regarding which immunizations are needed but the majority of states require proof that your child has received at least the following immunizations:
    • Three doses (3) of Tetanus and Diphtheria, usually received as DPT, DT or Td vaccine.

    • Thee doses (3) of Polio vaccine.

    • One dose (1) each of Measles, Mumps, and Rubella after one year of age (two doses starting in 1998).

  • Proof of immunization consists of a written record indicating the month, day, and year that your child was immunized.

  • This information is requested at the time that your child is enrolled or registered for school.

  • The school usually provides a form for recording immunizations and it is the parent or guardian’s responsibility to contact the pediatrician or public health clinic where the child was immunized and get the needed documentation.
