A new software system just installed at the Medical Center is designed to target dangerous patterns in EMS responses, and prevent bioterror attacks.

The "First Watch" system constantly monitors EMS responses and the symptoms or illnesses they respond to, in an effort to recognize the spread of an epidemic or bioterror agent before it can go too far.

The system pages health officials whenever any of its warning levels are triggered, and EMS personnel can have instant access to real-time stats, and react accordingly.

The system is the first of its kind in Kentucky, and one of 13 nationwide, but officials say it is a trend that will expand to other hospitals soon.
