Lawyers for a man accused of fatally shooting a Central Kentucky police chief have asked a judge to suppress statements their client made to officers after his arrest.
According to court documents, James Barnett’s lawyers said Barnett asked about an attorney before making incriminating statements while in custody.
Barnett is accused of murdering Clay City Police Chief Randy Lacy.
Powell County Circuit Clerk Annabelle Haddix said the judge indicated he would take the matter under advisement.
Haddix said the judge also set a Jan. 7, 2008, trial date for Barnett. She adds prosecutors filed a notice they would seek the death penalty.
