Mitch McConnell has joined other top Republicans in calling for Idaho Senator Larry Craig to forfeit his committee posts.

They say it's in the best interest of the Senate until an investigation is completed.

Some other Republicans are ready to shove him out of office completely.

He's a family values Republican and the subject of a sex scandal. Now some GOP members of Congress say Idaho Senator Larry Craig should step down.

"I believe that he pled guilty and he had the opportunity to plead innocent, so I think he should resign," explained Senator John McCain.

Craig was arrested in June in a Minneapolis airport for alleged "lewd behavior" in a men's bathroom.

The senator pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct, a plea he now says was a mistake.

"I did nothing wrong at the Minneapolis airport," Craig admitted.

He blamed The Idaho Statesman newspaper for doggedly pursuing allegations about his sexual preference.

"In pleading guilty, I overreacted in Minneapolis because of the stress of The Idaho Statesman investigation and the rumors it has fueled all around," Craig continued.

Craig said he pleaded guilty to make it go away. The conservative senator who opposes gay rights denies rumors that he is gay.

"Let me be clear--I am not gay. I have never been gay," Craig assured.

The Idaho Statesman is also now calling for his resignation saying he can no longer effectively serve.

But Idaho's governor hailed Craig as a tremendous senator who has done a lot for the state.

"It's a trying time for them and the glare of the media right here at home and nationally is going to be awful bright and I just wish them well," Governor Butch Otter said.

Craig has made no indications that he will give up his Senate seat but will announce in September if he will seek re-election.
