Repeated Hits Kill Small Boy

A report by a deputy coroner says a Kentucky first grader died this week from repeated hits from a hand, fist and possibly a belt.

Six-year-old Mar'riel Lucas died Sept. 29 at Kosair Children's Hospital.

The boyfriend of the child's mother was charged with his death.

Twenty-two-year-old Antwan Hayes pleaded not guilty in court, but police say Hayes confessed to beating the boy sometime before midnight Sept. 28 while the boy's mother was at work.

Hayes is lodged in the Hardin County Detention Center on a $500,000 full cash bond.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 24.
