You won't have much luck getting into the Red River Gorge part of the national park these days. "All trails are closed until further notice."

The shutdown happened shortly after learning about a bear attack on one of the trails.

According to Fish and Wildlife officials, a hiker saw a bear on Tunnel Ridge Trail and tried to scare it away by yelling at it.

Officials say the bear walked off the trail only to circle round and attack the man. The hiker tried to defend himself with a stick, but the bear attack lasted until a group of hikers heard his cries for help a few minutes later. The hiker we're told was taken to the hospital with a gash across the chest and a possible bite mark on the leg.

Wildlife and forestry officials both say he has been allowed to go home. meanwhile they continue to look for the bear.

"It seems unprovoked," said David Maner of Daniel Boone National Forest. "Very unusual circumstances, I think it might be a young bear."

Up until the weekend, officials say bear sightings in the Red River Gorge have been uncommon. Now reports of up to seven sightings have been taken in the area.

"We had four or five sightings yesterday," said Maner. "We're going back to those areas and looking there first."

The victim told wildlife officials the bear had red tags in both ears, Indicating it's been captured before.

Officials say they've set up traps throughout the area, hoping to catch the bear.
