Gary Hall thought he had the flu. After a blood test, his thought turned out to be false.

The test for West Nile virus came back positive.

Hall says he was surprised to learn he had the dreaded illness. Hall's symptoms include headache, high fever, swollen glands and a rash.

His physician, Dr. Karen Small says those symptoms are typical with West Nile fever. This specific illness is one of the stages associated with the West Nile virus.

In some humans, the virus continues to affect the body past the point of fever to include encephalitis or swelling of the brain.

That isn't the case with Hall. His immune system went to work, attacking the virus.

Dr. Small says most healthy people have immune system's that will do the same.
