Law Enforcement Memorial Recognizes Fallen Officers

The Department of Criminal Justice pays tribute to fallen officers with an all new memorial.

Thirty-five Kentucky law enforcement officers names were added to the monument this year, including three killed in 2006.

They included Constable Elmer Kiser of Carter County, Kentucky State Trooper Jonathan Leonard and Bowling Green Police Officer David Whitson.

Officer Whitson was killed Oct. 31 of last year after he responded to a call.

During the call, Whitson suffered a fatal gunshot wound.

He was the first Bowling Green officer to die in the line of action.

The other 32 lawmen whose names were dedicated at the memorial were killed in the line of duty between 1883 and 2001.

The criteria for having a name placed on the Kentucky Law Enforcement Memorial is that it be on the National Law Enforcement Memorial.

Jerry Sanders, from our sister-station in Lexington, has more on the memorial that honors 381 of Kentucky's finest.
