The American Red Cross of South Central Kentucky gave the community a look at what a shelter would be like during a large-scale disaster.

Inside the First Christian Church on State St., you could see exactly what a shelter would look like. American Red Cross officials say the mock shelter is an opportunity to train volunteers to set up a large operation.

"I really want the community to be aware that American Red Cross is prepared to respond for disaster and what that looks like for the community, and further how the community can get involved with this preparedness process," said American Red Cross of South Central Kentucky Development Coordinator Ashley Bernaugh.

Aside from coming to the mock shelter and learning about the process today, Bernaugh says the community can help the American Red Cross prepare for disasters by donating items and money. She says 91 cents of every dollar goes directly to their efforts, including the items seen at today's shelter.
