WOODBINE, Ky. (AP) -- UPDATE UPDATE 5:15AM 12/2/13

A volunteer with the Knox-Whitley Animal Shelter that burned down on Friday night says all of the 21 dogs that made it out have found a home, but the nonprofit that runs the shelter could use donations to help rebuild. Our local BRAWA shelter has dropboxes for such donations.

Theresa Martin said they do not yet know what caused the fire that killed one dog and 34 cats. Another dog is missing and presumed dead.

Martin said the dogs were penned in a horseshoe shape around the edge of the building. The cats were in an interior room and firefighters had just begun to bring them out when the shelter roof collapsed. They were able to rescue only 3 cats.

Martin said those wanting to donate to the shelter should do so through the group's official Facebook page.

A fire official says about a dozen cats and dogs have died in a fire at a Whitley County Animal Shelter

Larry Centers, a battalion chief with the Oak Grove volunteer fire department, said some animals were rescued during the fire on Friday night at the Knox-Whitley Animal Shelter.

However, Centers estimated that about four dogs and 10 cats died in the blaze. Centers says part of the building's roof caved in and firefighters were unable to reach some of the animals.

The shelter's web site lists about 25 dogs and cats that had been up for adoption.

Centers says the cause of the fire is under investigation.
