FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- A group of Kentucky residents want federal judges to draw new political boundaries around the state's legislative districts.

American Civil Liberties Union of Kentucky attorney Bill Sharp filed a lawsuit Friday in U.S. District Court on behalf of five Kentuckians who claim the inaction of lawmakers left them without adequate representation. Another group of residents filed a similar lawsuit late last month.

Redistricting is supposed to occur every 10 years to account for population changes. Kentucky's overall population grew from 4 million to 4.3 million between 2000 and 2010, requiring a major reconfiguration of legislative districts.

Lawmakers have redrawn congressional district boundaries, but have yet to resolve legislative boundaries. Their first attempt last year was declared unconstitutional.

Sharp asked that a three-judge panel to draw the new districts.
