BARREN / WARREN COUNTY, Ky. (WBKO) - Some are calling it the summer that never came.

"It has been a rollercoaster for sure because of the unusual weather pattern," says Lisa Davis, Park Manager of the Barren River Lake State Resort Park.

A near record wet summer took its toll on outdoor activities. At Barren River Lake, the 4th of July was considered a complete washout. With only a few major holidays over the summer season, they are hopeful for a busy Labor Day weekend.

"We have a lot of people who are going to come in for the last hoopla of the year and our occupancy levels are all very good," says Davis.

While lost days from rain are in the past, the resort and neighboring attractions say this one weekend could make or break the season.

"Definitely, we historical have very strong holiday weekends," says Davis.

"It would be awesome especially the last holiday weekend, the 4th of July was a total washout," says Reed Gonzalez, Director of Operations at Beech Bend Park.

Reed Gonzalez's family has operated Beech Bend Park for years. They say this seasons weather created plenty of challenges they haven't seen before.

"This summer was like rain and cool, rain and cool. I honestly cannot remember the last time unless I was spending a summer in Canada or something that it has been this wet and mild," says Gonzalez.

Despite the uncertainty, some have already grabbed a spot at the parks campground.

"Being open Labor Day gives you that last chance to have fun before summer is over," says Gonzalez.

Attractions and tourists hope mother nature doesn't put a early end to the weekend.
