"It's not scary at all. We keep it very strict. Everything safety. It's very easy to do. No big deal really," says Gallagher.

EDMONSON COUNTY, Ky. (WBKO) - Heavy rains didn't keep competitors away from the Rockcastle Shooting Center for the GLOCK Sport Shooting Foundation competition. More than 250 participants brought their guns to take their best shot. But before anyone steps out onto the range, GSSF has some strict safety regulations.

"We don't allow them to come with loaded guns. They need to clear their guns before they get here. We also make sure they have the guns locked back so you can see there is nothing in the gun. No magazine. Nothing in the chamber," says Range Master Cindy Noyes.

Competitors are only allowed to handle their guns at two designated areas. Range officers stand by each shooting station and must be certified. Their main priority is safety and to keep the competition simple.

"This environment is very static. You stand in one position. You fire your firearm ten times. Then you reload and start over," says Range Officer Jeremy Kifer.

GSSF says simplicity and safety allow the sport to be family friendly.

"We've have shooters as old as 92 shoot the match. In fact, we even had a quadriplegic, paralyzed from the neck down shoot this match one time," says Scott Gilbertson

Maura Gallagher started shooting a year and a half ago. She admits picking up a gun can be intimidating, but this competition made her feel safe.

"It's not scary at all. We keep it very strict. Everything safety. It's very easy to do. No big deal really," says Gallagher.

With gun control and gun safety on the minds of many, GSSF says their regulations were in place well before the national attention.
