This summer has brought some intense heat, causing a drought for much of the country. South central Kentucky has been no exception.

As the summer winds down, some are making plans for Labor Day, and for may that means heading to the lake.

Some at Barren River Lake State Resort Park are reflecting on what this hot, dry summer has done for business.

"We've seen more of a resurgence in our business as far as the golf course, and camping has picked up. So it's been more of a roller coaster with the extreme weather patterns," Barren River Lake State Park Resort Park Manager.

The marinas were seeing the same trend.

"When it got 106, things slowed down. On the days we had the really hot temperatures, you know, over 100, we could see a decline in customers," Barren River Lake State Park Marina Manager Wayne Shelton.

With the heat, came the drought. The lack of rain left water levels a little lower than some may like.

"It effects customers. They're kind of afraid to get out on the lake and run, because there's a good chance they can tear up the lower unit, or tear up their boat. So they're a little more skeptical when the lake level down," said Shelton.

The temperature and water levels aren't the only things that impact lake patrons, and there's one thing that gave this year an early boost.

"Fishing activity effects the lake business also. This spring, late winter and spring, we had some phenomenal fishing going on and our visitation was really up in some areas. And that drops back as the fishing conditions change," said Park Manager for the Barren River Lake Army Corps of Engineers Carlos Lopez.

The park resort is now preparing for Labor Day weekend, and hoping for some great weather. Shelton said there's still time for to rent boats.
