"We didn't build schools in 1964 for all the technology and the power to make a school run well like we need today," says Wix.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) - It's a new start for Dishman-McGinnis Elementary. Students and staff broke ground Monday afternoon for a brand new school. The 64,000 square foot facility will expand to educate 500 students, bringing more changes down the road.

"We are probably going to look at redrawing some of our lines in the district. Some students that currently live in this neighborhood that are going to Parker Bennett Curry will probably attend the new school," says Superintendent of Bowling Green Independent Schools Joe Tinius.

The current school was built in 1964. Administration says it's beginning to show its age and is filling up at the same time.

"We have well outgrown the space that we have. If you walk around the building you will see that we are using every corner of the building as a classroom. So having more space to have our kids to learn in," says Principal Michael Wix.

The space may be a pile of stone and rock right now, but the new school will be built to last. Using the power of mother nature to keep it going strong.

"We didn't build schools in 1964 for all the technology and the power to make a school run well like we need today," says Wix.

"We have a solar powered water heaters and then also an array that will generate electricity for the building. We are very excited about that. We have the water heater at T.C. Cherry and it has performed very well," says Tinius.

Construction begins immediately with the school scheduled to open in August 2014.

The location of the new school is on Glen Lily Road in Bowling Green at the former site of L. C. Curry Elementary.
