HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A southwestern Kentucky businessman used the occasion of his arrest by Hopkinsville police to announce his bid for the city council.

The Kentucky New Era reported that Derek Patterson pledged to run on a platform that the police were like the "Gestapo" — the secret police force in Nazi Germany — after being picked up Thursday on a charge of hindering prosecution or apprehension.

The arrest stemmed from Patterson giving coats to two people form the lost and found at his bar, DT's Last Call. The pair told police Patterson gave them the coats to help them escape authorities.

Police officers wouldn't comment on the ongoing case. Capt. Mike Seis said Patterson's alleged involvement in the incident was thoroughly investigated before the charge was filed.
