The hard work of some Edmonson County Middle School students could soon benefit the whole student body. ECMS is a finalist in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest, giving them a chance to win $110,000 in new technology.

"When they notified me on Monday that we actually made it as a finalist I was so excited because we were 1 of 15 schools in the United States to make it to this point," says Library Media Specialist Charla Caudill.

Students brought their calculators and paper out to nearby Mammoth Cave National Park. Their research on wood frogs was filmed and submitted to the Samsung contest.

Students say its been a lot of work, but it beats sitting in a classroom.

"It's pretty fun because you get to talk to all kinds of people you never thought you would talk to before and I mean you get to go out there and get in the water," says student Nate Wilson.

"It's really good to know we are helping out the environment just by learning all this stuff and we are going to express it to the whole community later on," says student Morgan Ray.

This continued research may also bring success to students who want a future in the science industry.

"My dream is to become a pharmacist and definitely apply some of this," says one student.

The schools fate on the $110,000 rests on America's online votes. Staff says the money would be put to good use, further improving an already strong science program.

"I am hoping we can possibly get tablets for all of our students to use. I think that would be a wonderful asset because our students could actually perform experiments on those tablets in the classroom and it would help add more interaction with our lesson," says Caudill.

For students it's not all about winning. They know their calculations and tabulations have already made an impact.
