GOLDEN POND, Ky. (AP) — The mating call of the mature bull elk can be heard this time of year at Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area.
It's called bugling and it sounds like a loud squeal. A release from Land Between The Lakes says the peak time of year when elk bugling can be heard is mid-September to mid-October.
The area's prairie is home to 51 elk, along with 52 bison.
Wildlife Technician Curtis Fowler says visiting the prairie in late afternoon is the best time to hear the unusual sound and see elk calves.
Elk were introduced into the 700-acre prairie in 1996. The prairie features a 3.5-mile paved loop road and stops where visitors can view wildlife and learn more about the habitat.
