Empty Bowls Event to Address Hunger

It was when Garry Taylor saw a man searching through a garbage can for food one morning that he knew he had to help the hungry in his community. He saw empty bowls as a way to do just that.

"It started with potters, and not just professional potters, but students at the area high schools like Warren East and South Warren," said Empty Bowls Organizer Garry Taylor.

Those bowls were filled with soup donated by local restaurants. The proceeds of each $10 donation will go to food pantries like the Life Care Ministry, and the Manna Mart at HOTEL Inc.

"The donations will help in many ways, and also as we're adding more fresh produce and dairy and meat into our food pantry, and expanding our community garden so we can grow more food to bring into our pantry," said HOTEL Inc. Director Rhondell Miller.

Taylor says you don't have to look far to see a need.

"You see people on TV in foreign countries starving, and that's awful and a huge problem, but our neighbors, people who live just down the street from us often times, don't have enough food," said Taylor.

It's local pantries, he says are helping fight that hunger here at home.

"They're doing a great job of getting food to people, but they need help, too. They need help getting food to them," said Taylor.

The bowls from tonight's meal will go home with those who made donations.

"It also serves as a reminder that there are people in our neighborhoods every day who face empty bowls at mealtimes," said Taylor.

That's a reminder he hopes the hundreds who took home bowls don't forget.

The event actually sold out of their nearly 250 hand-made bowls within an hour, and continued serving soup to donors.
