It didn't take long after the wintry mix of ice hit the roadways before things became slippery this morning.

"Before they started to realize what was going on they started to slide," said Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Dept. of Highways District 4 Public Information Officer Chris Jessie.

That's how this car ended up in a ditch.

"I just hit a solid sheet of ice, and my car did a couple 360s and just went right down in here," said driver from Nashville Jeremiah Ball.

And he wasn't the only one. Cars, semi tractor trailers, and even buses were sliding off the roads. It seemed no one could escape mother nature's fury.

"We had a couple semis jack-knifed, one of those accidents involved a bus on the Hart/ Barren county line," said Jessie.

Kentucky State Police answered 875 calls for help in the Elizabethtown Post 4 area alone. That's compared to the usual 50 to a hundred calls a day.
46 accidents were reported on roads in the Bowling Green Post 3 area, while post 4 had 59.
Law enforcement did what they could checking on those off the road, but the construction in the area made it difficult to get first responders and tow trucks to accidents.

"First of all, we could not get our tow trucks there. The tow truck industry was stretched very thin.. law enforcement was stretched very thin. It was very difficult to respond to I-65 plus the barriers in the middle of the direction of lanes, and it's not easy to cross over," said Jessie.

While most of those accidents were non injury or minor injury, it was the inability to access vehicles blocking roadways that had many travelers on this stretch of road more than seven hours.

Jessie says crews from the transportation cabinet will continue to treat and clean those roadways. As temperatures drop back below the freezing point tonight.
