Chevrolet unveiled the new 2014 Corvette Stingray in Detroit earlier this month. It was put on display at the General Motors Assembly Plant here in Bowling Green today, but the local unveiling wasn't the plant's only big announcement.

It has a 450 horsepower engine, making it the most powerful standard model Corvette ever and the most fuel efficient too, but it wasn't just the new gleaming red Corvette Stingray that caught attention today at the Bowling Green Corvette plant.

"In the midst of all that excitement, we're able to announce even more good news for the Bowling Green Assembly, and that is we're going to move our Performance Build Center from Wixom, Michigan right here to Bowling Green Kentucky," said GM Bowling Green Corvette Assembly Plant Manager Dave Tatman.

A move that puts the Bowling Green plant in a league of its own.

"The only place in the industry where a buyer can come, build their own engine if they choose to, and then have us put that engine in their vehicle while they watch us build it," said Tatman.

To GM, it only made sense to let the ones making the car, make the engine.

"This is a great plant. It's a good workforce. They understand the quality needed for this car, and they understand the image of this car," said GM North America Manufacturing Manager Arvin Jones.

An understanding worth a $3.5 million investment.

"I think it says so much about Bowling Green that GM is willing to invest more money here in our wonderful community," said Kentucky State Representative Jody Richards.

With that investment, comes the creation of 20 jobs.
GM says it hopes to have the Performance Build Center open in 2014.

Bowling Green's GM plant recently underwent a $131 million upgrade, including $52 million dollars for a new body shop to manufacture the new C7 frame.
