It wasn't what you would call a typical day for students at Potter Gray Elementary.

"Nowadays more and more children are spending less and less time outside," says WKU Director and Professor Dr. Terry Wilson.

And outside is exactly where students were headed today to collect pollution samples.

"They'll be able to make some judgment calls about how healthy the water is here and we are gonna be able to help them with that," says Wilson.

GM Green, Earth Force and WKU teamed up to teach students about water pollution and school officials were on board with the plan.

"I think helps them understand their responsibility to take care of the environment, so that as they grow older, they still have a place like Trammel Creek to come that is unpolluted and provides a great deal of information about life," says BG Independent Schools Superintendent Joe Tinius.

WKU volunteers were more than happy to help teach kids about the environment.

"This was just a natural match for us, the fact that we're actually able to work with the kids themselves and the teachers is really valuable, good experience for everybody, adults and kids," says Wilson.

And don't expect this to be a one time occasion.

"GM has also opened up a wildlife habitat on their own property, we want the kids there to participate as well and do projects at the same thing, so we're looking forward to building a future relationship with all the schools," says GM Environmental Engineer Olin Desonier.

"And the direction we're moving with our science program across the district especially at the elementary level to make it a more hands on experience for the students," says Tinius.

So the students who may have missed out this time, will definitely have their turn next go around.

The GM Green partnership with WKU and Earth Force has been ongoing since 2005.

They do plan to bring out at least three more schools to creek next week for more water pollution testing.
