FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- Gov. Steve Beshear could be weeks away from deciding whether to expand the state's Medicaid program to cover, by some estimates, an additional 300,000 Kentuckians.

Beshear said Monday that he expects to make the decision by the end of June.

Kentucky's $6 billion Medicaid program already provides medical coverage for some 800,000 people. The federal Affordable Care Act allows state to expand coverage to people with incomes up to 138 percent of the federal poverty level.

Beshear told reporters his aides still are trying to pin down the number of additional Kentuckians who would be eligible for coverage and how much that coverage would cost.

The federal government will fully fund the expansion for the first three years, with the state's share gradually increasing to 10 percent by 2020.
