PADUCAH, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear will meet with new Energy Department Secretary Ernest Moniz over the future of the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant.
The Paducah Sun reports Beshear will discuss the plant with Moniz during a meeting in Washington on July 7.
The operator of the facility, which supplies enriched uranium to nuclear power plants, announced in May that it would cease production after federal energy officials decided to end its work. The shutdown over the next year of the nation's only government-owned and operated uranium enrichment facility will put more than 1,100 workers out of high-paying jobs with benefits.
Beshear said he wants to pressure DOE officials to speed up the process of redeveloping the plant and push for proper decontamination of the site.
