New local and chain businesses have been popping up all over Bowling Green, and this weekend is the grand opening for a couple of them.

Shoppers say they've been waiting a while for stores like these to come to town.

"I've seen the town growing and it seems like the economy is doing pretty well down there, and this can only help," said Bill Preston, who was shopping at Dick's Sporting Goods this weekend.

"Creates more jobs," said Ed Della Pietro, also shopping during the grand opening.

The shoppers had many reasons why they're ready for the new businesses coming to town.

"I was really disappointed when I came down here nine years ago, because the sporting goods stores really didn't have like golf and all the other stuff. You'd have to drive all over the place to find everything, and I know Dick's has pretty much everything in one spot," Preston said.

Although there were already sporting goods stores in town, people say it's beneficial to have multiple options.

"I like choices and competition. It helps everybody," Della Pietro said.

Bed Bath & Beyond also will open soon in the same Gary Farms shopping center.

"Another store I couldn't wait to get, too, because I love to cook, so I always had to go down to Tennessee to the Rivergate Mall to go to the Bed Bath & Beyond down there if I needed stuff," Preston said.

It's not just chain stores opening this weekend. It's also the grand opening for a new local music store on Smallhouse Road, called Mellow Matt's Music and More, which sells vinyl records.

"The way the economy is, a store like this is great because it's local and we carry used products, too, so it's definitely more affordable for people to come to a place like this that are music lovers," said Matt Pfefferkorn, owner of Mellow Matt's.

Shoppers said other than anticipating more traffic as the stores open, they're pleased to watch the city continue to grow.

Dick's Sporting Goods has offered extended hours this weekend.

It's open 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, and former University of Kentucky Basketball player Ron Mercer will be there from 1:00 to 3:00.
