BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) -- One Bowling Green woman has been using her talent to brighten the days of the people at Signature Healthcare.

Every Wednesday, Susan Norman goes there to sing hymns to patients.

"It's not one of those fun things that you do, you know, to go to a nursing home. That's not your top 10 things that you would think people would like to do, but Susan has done that week after week," said Barbara Kemp, a longtime friend of Susan's.

Susan brings a little sunshine to the Alzheimer's unit every week.

"She comes here every Wednesday and sings gospel music to all the residents. She is a God-send. I can't ask for anybody that's nicer," said Megan Herrman, a social worker there.

While the patients often have a hard time remembering things...

"They will remember all the verses of several hymns that I'll sing, and they'll sing right along," Norman said. "It's therapeutic for me to sing, and I think it's equally therapeutic for them to sing. It takes them to a place they haven't visited in a long time."

She started singing for the patients about seven years ago.

"We brought my dad here. He had Alzheimer's. She just wanted to be able to bless and encourage me, and she knew by coming here to sing that it would mean so much to me and to my family," Kemp said.

The patients' families also visit to see Susan.

"My mother would come to see my dad and she'd always come on Wednesdays to be able to hear Susan. It encouraged her, because she was at a point where it's difficult when her mate is here and she's not. So it encouraged her and blessed her and meant a lot to her, and so for the families, the residents and the staff, it's been a wonderful thing," Kemp said.

Kemp's dad has since passed away, but Susan continues to visit the other patients.

"They sing with me. They have favorite songs that they want me to sing. Just to try to encourage them a little bit and look in their eyes and shine a little love of Jesus on them," Norman said.

For lifting the spirits of Alzheimer's patients, we honor Susan Norman as this week's Hometown Hero.
