Severe storms packed with powerful winds were an unwelcome wake up call for many in the small community of Penrod, Muhlenberg County.

"When it came past the trailer it just shook it real hard and sounded like a big whistle coming through," says Cody Buchanan

"Our trailer kinda lifted off the foundation and went back down," says Darlene Cook

"I heard some strong wind blowing and something hit the side of the house," says James McIntosh.

Chainsaws are the tool of choice for the long clean-up ahead.

Roads are blocked, roofs are considered scrap and power poles lie cracked in half.

One mobile home now sits upside down, wheels up. The mess is Darlene Cooks former home.

"I thank the good lord for saving us and we were not living in that trailer any longer," says Cook.

Up the street a church sits without a roof. Unfortunately, it's a problem they have seen before.

"I said oh no not again because we just had a steeple blew off in July. We had the roof replaced and now it's off again," says Larry Howard.

Off and into a nearby cemetery. Despite the damage in all directions some homes were somehow left unscathed.

"We are thankful. I mean it hit all around us. We thank the good lord for looking over us you know," says James McIntosh, who lives directly next door to the church missing a roof.

While some are counting their blessings, others are amazed at the sheer force of mother nature.

"It's just awesome what it does. You just never know. It can do anything just in a minute," says Larry Howard.

As crews descend on the area to restore some normalcy to the community. Residents of Penrod hope to never experience weather like this ever again.

Despite all the damage the local fire department tells us there were only minor injured reported.
