"I didn't come when they first started because I couldn't think I could do anything. So I came out here and one of the ladies showed me how to do things," says Warden

AUBURN, Ky. (WBKO) - With each push of a threaded needle a local group of women know their hard work will pay off for someone else.

"We have all year to work on them. Then we have a sale when we have our Thanksgiving dinner and we sell like up to $5,000 worth of quilts," says Elsie Carpenter

Funds raised are donated to the New Friendship Baptist Church youth fund. Finished quilts are also handed off to local senior homes, needy families and mission groups. The ladies say it's a unique way to give back while enjoying company at the same time.

"Instead of giving money to everything we do this and have our fellowship together," says Carpenter

"We have more fun. This is our favorite day of the week. After Sunday to come back on Tuesday and get to be with everybody and socialize again. It's fun," says Linda Howlett

"I live by myself and it is really a good therapy to come quilting and be with the ladies," says Nova Warden

The group admits each thread that goes into a quilt can be intimidating to master, but it's a technique anyone can learn.

"I didn't come when they first started because I couldn't think I could do anything. So I came out here and one of the ladies showed me how to do things," says Warden

"I always wanted to do this and one time Elsie at church said you didn't have to be a quilter to come. I thought perfect now I can come. I've learned how to quilt. I do a lot of the bindings for the quilts." says Howlett

For their hard work, threading each piece of fabric together to raise money for a needy cause, we honor the New Friendship Quilters as this week's Hometown Hero.
