National Board Certification is administered by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards and is considered a top achievement in the profession.

The Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board said in a news release Tuesday that the top 10 states with the highest number of teachers certified in 2012 were North Carolina, Washington, Illinois, California, Arkansas, South Carolina, Kentucky, Virginia, Maryland and New York.

Overall in Kentucky, 2,721 teachers have achieved the certification. The national board's website says the state is ranked 10th nationally in overall number of teachers certified.
