LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — An inmate has pleaded not guilty to killing a fellow prisoner at a high-security prison tucked away in the Appalachian region of Kentucky.

U.S. District Judge Amul Thapar has yet to set a trial date for 31-year-old John Travis Millner, who is charged with murder in the death of 35-year-old Vincent Earl Smith. Both were housed at the United States Penitentiary Big Sandy in January 2009.

Millner entered the plea in Lexington on Thursday.

Prosecutors are seeking a death sentence for Miller if he's convicted. Prosecutors say Millner used a homemade ice pick before strangling him to death at the prison in Inez, Ky.

Millner is serving a life sentence without parole for using a high-powered rifle to shoot a person on New Year's Eve in 2002 in Washington.
