Kentucky Looking At Statewide Smoking Ban

The Kentucky General Assembly is looking at a possible statewide smoking ban after a house committee approved a bill to do just that this month.

The city of Bowling Green has a smoking ban, but places like Franklin do not have a smoking ban.

Sophie Bray manages Franklin Steak House and says she actually is in favor of a ban personally but not for business.

"It helps with the business. Restaurants that don't allow smoking in Franklin they do say it hurt their business a lot. I'm actually in favor of it because I don't smoke and I don't really like the smoking, but business wise it helps out with the business. So, that's why we allow smoking. If it was to be enforced no smoking then we will have to abide by it and go all non-smoking," said Bray.

Overtime Sports Grill also currently allows smoking inside, and with Franklin being so close to the state line they do draw people from Tennessee.

"No, I really don't think that we'll lose our Tennessee customers. We're a bar, so I don't think we'll lose our customers at all. We might actually gain some new customers of people not wanting to smoke coming in here now. It may help business, it may not hurt it," said Overtime Manager Amber Maxfield.

If the ban does come down, they have a way to meet in the middle.

"We already have a smoking side and a non-smoking, and here in Franklin we'll be building on a patio soon. So, you can go outside and smoke if it does become statewide. In Bowling Green we have the patio where you can smoke when it's open, but as far as business goes, no I don't think it will be affected," said Maxfield.

The bill is currently sitting in the house for discussion.

For the statewide smoking ban to become official, both the state senate and the house must approve the bill.
