Man Accused of Killing Marion Co. Sheriff Deputy in Court

The man accused of shooting a Marion County sheriff's deputy has pleaded not guilty.

49-year-old Dewayne Shipp is charged with murdering a police officer and being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun.

Shipp is accused of shooting 31-year-old Anthony Rakes during a traffic stop last month.

After shooting Rakes, police say Shipp then shot himself in the leg.

He is currently being held at the state reformatory in La Grange.

His trial has been set for September 23, and the prosecutor says this could be a death penalty case.
