BARREN COUNTY, Ky. (WBKO) -- Many people in our area are celebrating the unofficial start of summer this weekend at Barren River Lake Resort Park.
South Central Kentucky has been plagued with rainy weekends recently, but Mother Nature is being a little more cooperative this Memorial Day weekend.
"At first we thought we'd have a lot of debris in the water. The debris is clearing up though. It's about 80% gone," says Wayne Shelton, a managing partner at the state dock.
Shelton says a high water level and debris were a concern, but now some patrons are braving chilly temperatures.
"It's a little cool, but nothing you couldn't put a coat on and still enjoy the weather," says Chuck Gary, a Bowling Green resident.
"It's a little cool, but the water's fine and everybody's out, so it's a good time to be out," adds Jeff Edwards of Glasgow.
"Yesterday was really warm. The weather is part of it. As long as we have the sun shining, above 75-80 degrees, it's great," says Shelton.
However, some find the weather enjoyable and are excited to kick off a fun-filled summer.
"We're just out here having a good time. Just spending some time with the family, relaxing a little bit," says Christina Nunley of Gallatin, Tennessee.
"We're going to do a little tubing, a little wakeboarding, and enjoy the weather," adds Stephani Davis of Louisville.
If the weather isn't warm enough for you this weekend, there will be plenty of other opportunities to hit the lake.
"We'll be here all weekend. We got here Friday night. In fact, we're on vacation, so we'll be here through next week!" says Edwards.
"My wife and I are retired. We average coming here about three to four times a week, and spend the night whenever we want too," says Gary.
Shelton says most people will start packing up and heading home around three Monday afternoon.
Edwards also adds, if you want to enjoy the lake, without the crowd, he suggests visiting on a weekday.
