BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) - Mayor Bruce Wilkerson joined others across the country to proclaim Tuesday as Mayors Day Of Recognition and National Service.

Members of the Foster Grandparent and Retired Senior Volunteer Program were honored at Parker Bennett Curry Elementary. The programs match seniors with children who have special needs or desire an additional mentor.

Those who volunteer say they are honored to work with children each and every day.

"Well I decided to try and use some of the knowledge that I have to help others. It's very enjoyable. I mean it's something to get up and look forward to coming to work everyday because you know you are going to be doing something to help some child," says Volunteer Betty Nunn.

Parker Bennett Curry Elementary is a volunteer station for both programs. Community Action of Southern Kentucky says last year volunteers provided 97,581 hours of service.
