It wasn't unlike 74-year-old Willie Lenwood Jones to help those in need, but this time unfortunately it cost him his life.

The icy roads caused a car to slip off of Bill Pedigo Rd. in Metcalfe County Friday morning.

"He was just a good samaritan, he really was. If he saw you on the side of the road he would help you out," says his son, Shawn Jones.

That's exactly what Jones, or Pete as everyone called him was needed for around 11:30 Friday morning.

A witness says the road was a sheet of ice when a mail truck slipped of the side.

The witness says she was not surprised when Pete drove over this hill with a tractor to pull the mailman out.

"He would do anything for you, take the shirt of his back to give it to you whatever you needed he was always there to help out," Pete's daughter, Michelle Blakey says.

But road conditions were terrible, and when a wrecker from the Edmonton Marathon came to help, police say Pete and the mailman were in the road.

The mailman moved out of the road, but Pete slipped, and the wrecker couldn't stop.

His son and daughter say they aren't surprised by their father's actions, but by the outcome of his good deed.

"I'm truly in shock and I hope the shock will wear off soon," Michelle says.

"You wonder why it happened. Here he was trying to help someone and of course he ends up getting hurt," says Shawn.

The Metcalfe County coroner pronounced Willie Lenwood "Pete" Jones dead at the scene of the accident.

And now, a family is left without their loved one.

"Dad was a great man and I'm going to miss him," Michelle says.

"You can tell by the community outcry just how great of a person he truly was," Shawn says.

Funeral arrangements have been set for Jones.

The visitation will be at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Edmonton on Tuesday.

The funeral will be Wednesday at the same location.
